OpenAI has appointed former Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India.
Singh will join the company in September and report to Kiran Mani, the former JioStar executive who was appointed Managing Director for Asia Pacific earlier this year.
The company said Singh will be OpenAI’s most senior leader in India, responsible for consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and operations.
“India is one of OpenAI’s top priority markets, and Prabhjeet’s appointment reflects our continued investment in the country,” the company said. “His focus will include building partnerships and supporting India’s wider AI ecosystem, while helping more consumers, businesses, institutions and government bodies benefit from AI.”
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market by ChatGPT users after the United States, with around 100 million weekly active users, according to CEO Sam Altman.
Before joining OpenAI, Singh led Uber’s mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He spent 11 years at the company and played a key role in expanding its operations across the region before announcing his resignation on June 26.
An alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Ahmedabad, Singh brings experience in scaling consumer technology businesses in India at a time when OpenAI is increasing its focus on enterprise adoption and ecosystem partnerships in the country.
