OpenAI has reportedly sacked a senior policy executive who opposed the introduction of an “adult mode” for ChatGPT, amid a discrimination complaint lodged by a colleague.
Ryan Beiermeister, who served as OpenAI’s Vice President of Product Policy, was dismissed in January after a male colleague accused her of sex discrimination, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Beiermeister has firmly denied the allegation.
“The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false,” she told the newspaper.
OpenAI did not respond to requests for comment, and Beiermeister had not replied to further media enquiries at the time of publication.
As per the report, Beiermeister’s termination followed her criticism of a planned ChatGPT feature dubbed “adult mode.” The new mode would introduce erotica into the chatbot user experience. Fidji Simo, who serves as OpenAI’s CEO of Applications—a role overseeing the company’s consumer-facing products—told reporters that the new feature is planned to launch during the first quarter of this year.
Beiermeister and other employees expressed concerns about the potential impact on certain user groups, although the precise nature of those concerns has not been made public, the report said.
OpenAI has denied that her dismissal was linked to her objections. The company reportedly told staff that Beiermeister had “made valuable contributions during her time at OpenAI” and that her departure was unrelated to any issues she had raised internally.
The report said she was dismissed following a period of leave.
The departure comes at a sensitive time for OpenAI, as it seeks to balance rapid product expansion with regulatory scrutiny, public trust concerns and internal governance challenges, while ChatGPT’s global user base continues to grow.
Beiermeister joined OpenAI after holding senior roles at several major technology firms. Her LinkedIn profile indicates she previously spent four years on Meta’s product team and more than seven years at Palantir, known for its work with government and enterprise clients.
