OpenAI is hiring Applied AI Engineers and Applied AI Architects in Mumbai and Delhi, expanding its India team around enterprise AI deployments as the company builds out its local operations.
The roles sit within OpenAI’s Technical Success organisation and focus on helping customers move AI applications from early use-case selection and prototyping into production.
The Applied AI Engineer role involves working directly with enterprise customers to design, build and deploy AI systems.
OpenAI says engineers will write and debug code, build evaluation systems, resolve complex integrations, and make technical decisions about model behaviour, reliability, latency, cost, safety, security, and governance.
The company says it will measure success by production systems, sustained adoption, and customer impact rather than demonstrations alone.
The Applied AI Architect role is focused on senior technical ownership of customer accounts. Architects will work with company leadership and technical teams to develop AI strategies and guide deployments across ChatGPT Enterprise, the OpenAI API, Codex and other agentic AI products.
The role covers architecture, data, integration, security, privacy, governance, evaluation and deployment, with the job description describing the architect as the ‘CTO of your book of business’.
OpenAI’s current India careers listings also include roles in enterprise sales, B2B marketing, go-to-market enablement, product partnerships, AI deployment and workplace operations.
The hiring comes as OpenAI expands its physical presence in India. In February, the company announced plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, alongside its existing presence in New Delhi. OpenAI said the expansion would better serve users and partners in India.
OpenAI announced in June that Prabhjeet Singh, the former president of Uber India and South Asia, will become its Managing Director for India in September.
Singh will be OpenAI’s senior-most executive in India and will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption and strategic partnerships.
India has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it OpenAI’s second-largest market after the US. India also has the company’s largest student user base globally.
OpenAI has been expanding its India operations across consumer, enterprise, infrastructure and education, with partnerships spanning Tata Group, JioHotstar, Eternal, Pine Labs, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED and MakeMyTrip.
Through its Tata partnership, OpenAI is developing AI-ready data-centre capacity in India, starting with 100 MW and with the potential to scale to 1 GW, while Tata plans to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce and TCS plans to use Codex for software development.
