OpenAI has revealed plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, expanding its presence in India as competition among global AI companies grows. These new offices will complement OpenAI’s existing presence in New Delhi.

The move comes as Anthropic announced its new office in Bengaluru.

“India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in a statement.

“Through OpenAI for India, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India,” he added.

India already has more than 100 million people using ChatGPT weekly across students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs, and this initiative builds on that momentum.

OpenAI’s expansion is part of its broader push in India, which includes partnerships with businesses and educational institutions. The company recently partnered with fintech firm Pine Labs and online travel platform MakeMyTrip to integrate AI tools into customer services and internal operations.

Pine Labs will add OpenAI’s APIs to its AI systems to build agentic commerce, where financial systems do more than record payments and can automatically manage and improve the processes behind each transaction.

OpenAI has also partnered with Eternal Limited to expand AI deployments across its commerce and ecosystem platforms, including Zomato, Blinkit, District, Hyperpure, Feeding India and its AI-native venture Nugget.

Meanwhile, it is also teaming up with the Tata Group to develop AI-ready data centre infrastructure in India.

As part of this, OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data centre business. Initially, this will start with 100 megawatts of capacity and could scale up to one gigawatt over time.

In education, OpenAI is offering ChatGPT Edu licences to universities to help students and faculty use AI for learning and research. Partner institutions include IIM Ahmedabad, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and Pearl Academy.
