OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Ads in India, bringing advertisements to the Free and Go tiers as the company expands its advertising business in one of its largest markets.
The ads will be available to logged-in adults, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users will continue to get an ad-free experience.
WPP and Omnicom will be OpenAI’s first agency partners for ChatGPT Ads in India. More than 50 brands are expected to run advertisements on ChatGPT in the country this week, with OpenAI saying the agency model is non-exclusive.
OpenAI will also open self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager in India on September 4. Businesses will be able to start campaigns with daily budgets from ₹725.
“India is one of the most dynamic markets in the world for how people use ChatGPT to learn, build, and discover. Our weekly active users have doubled year-on-year, with many of them going beyond simple searches and changing how they make decisions,” Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI, said in a statement.
“With ChatGPT Ads, businesses of every size can introduce themselves at relevant, high-context moments when decisions are beginning to take shape,” he added.
OpenAI said ads will appear below a ChatGPT response when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. They will be labelled as sponsored and kept visually separate from ChatGPT’s answers.
The company said advertisements will not influence ChatGPT’s responses. Advertisers will also not have access to users’ chats, chat history, memories, or personal details. OpenAI said it does not sell user data to advertisers.
“Our goal is to make those interactions useful, help marketers design for intelligent experiences, and preserve what makes ChatGPT valuable: independent answers, conversations that stay private from advertisers, and meaningful user control,” Dugan said.
Users will be able to dismiss ads, provide feedback, see why an ad was shown, manage advertising personalisation, and clear data used for advertising.
Ads will not be shown on accounts belonging to people who identify themselves, or are predicted, to be under 18. They also will not appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including mental health and politics.
Advertisers will receive aggregate campaign metrics such as impressions and clicks, rather than information about individual conversations.
OpenAI said the advertising business will help support free and lower-cost access to its AI tools while giving businesses a way to reach users when they are researching products, comparing options, or making decisions.
The company plans to use feedback from users and advertisers to improve the advertising experience in India and introduce more formats, campaign objectives, and buying options over time.
