OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT’s capabilities with the launch of a new Library feature designed to make file management more seamless and centralised for users working across multiple formats.
The update allows any file uploaded or generated within ChatGPT—including PDFs, spreadsheets, and images—to be automatically stored in a dedicated Library. This creates a persistent repository that users can revisit, rather than re-uploading documents for each new interaction.
The move reflects a broader shift in generative AI tools towards becoming long-term productivity platforms, rather than single-session assistants. By retaining user files, ChatGPT positions itself as a workspace where documents can be iteratively analysed, edited and referenced over time.
Users can access recently uploaded files directly within the chat composer. A separate Library tab in the sidebar provides a more comprehensive view of all stored files. The feature also supports conversational queries about stored material, allowing users to ask for summaries or key insights from previously uploaded documents.
Generated images will continue to appear in a dedicated Images tab.
OpenAI said files will remain in the Library until manually deleted, although documents shared within Temporary Chat sessions will not be saved—a distinction aimed at preserving user control and privacy.
The feature is currently rolling out globally to Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers, with availability in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom expected at a later stage.
