Oracle has confirmed that it axed around 21,000 jobs globally over the past year, as the technology giant reshaped its business around the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to its latest annual report.
The US-based enterprise technology company said it had approximately 141,000 full-time employees as of May 31, 2026, down from about 162,000 a year earlier. The reduction represents roughly 13% of its global workforce.
“The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce,” according to the report.
The layoffs were first reported by Bloomberg in march this year.
The company noted that its products and services increasingly incorporate AI technologies, including embedded AI-driven automation, analytics, and generative AI capabilities.
“Our products and services include enterprise applications and infrastructure offerings that incorporate and are enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including embedded AI-driven automation and analytics and generative AI capabilities,” it added.
Oracle added that the workforce restructuring resulted in approximately $1.8 billion in severance payments and related costs during the last financial year.
The disclosure comes as Oracle prepares for a fresh fundraise. Earlier this year, the company said it could raise up to $50 billion in 2026 through a combination of debt and equity offerings.
Oracle's workforce reduction comes amid an industry-wide realignment driven by AI. As companies pour billions into AI models, data centres, and computing infrastructure, many are reassessing staffing needs and operational costs.
Amazon and Meta are among the firms that have announced layoffs while stepping up AI-related investments.
