IPL team Rajasthan Royals is using OpenAI across cricket analytics, player scouting, ticketing, content creation, and fan engagement, positioning AI as a tool to support human decision-making rather than replace it.
The IPL franchise has integrated OpenAI into its technology stack to analyse cricket data, build AI agents, and make information more accessible to coaches and other teams.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, RR COO Alok Chitre described the technology as a “thinking and doing layer” that brings together information from cricket-specific tools and data sources, turning it into actionable insights.
The system can process both visual and non-visual data, including bowling actions and batting strokes. The franchise is also using AI to reduce the amount of manual work required to analyse large volumes of information.
One application is giving coaches direct access to the franchise’s analytical database. Using voice-to-text, a coach can ask a question verbally and receive an answer based on the available data without having to go through an analyst for every query. The coach, however, remains responsible for the decision.
RR is using OpenAI’s Codex to build AI agents for cricket and commercial operations. During the IPL season, the agents analyse ticket-sales data, identify gaps and highlight opportunities.
The system can also generate visual representations of how different ticket-sales scenarios could affect stadium occupancy. Those insights can help the franchise decide when to open stands or change pricing.
The franchise has also experimented with AI in IPL auction planning. RR organised a hackathon where engineering graduates and other participants developed models and recommendations for an ideal 25-member squad using generative AI and OpenAI APIs.
The strongest participants were invited to Abu Dhabi to present their models to RR’s cricket leadership, including Kumar Sangakkara. Some recommendations influenced the franchise’s eventual decision-making.
RR has crossed 10 billion views and has built an in-house generative AI studio with two people focused on GenAI-led visual content. The team has used ChatGPT to create sets and backgrounds for player photoshoots, allowing creative staff to turn concepts into visuals without requiring formal design expertise.
The franchise has also used GenAI for commercial campaigns. In one tourism campaign, AI-generated visuals placed RR players at different destinations, reducing the need to physically move players for multiple shoots.
RR said human oversight remains part of these workflows. Content goes through people before publication, while coaches continue to decide how cricket data should be used.
OpenAI’s Head of Marketing, India, Sheeladitya Mohanty, pointed to the possibility of more personalised cricket experiences, including through integration with JioHotstar.
