Tamil Nadu is building a public data backbone to support artificial intelligence adoption across sectors, with the state’s economic survey placing strong emphasis on datasets, digital infrastructure, and institutional readiness, alongside early pilots in agriculture, healthcare, and governance.
The Economic Survey of Tamil Nadu 2025-26, released on February 16, outlined the development of an AI open data platform under the Tamil Nadu AI Mission to enable innovation using government-backed datasets.
The proposed platform aims to provide “sanitised, standardised datasets for startups and developers,” supporting the creation and scaling of AI applications.
More than 100 datasets spanning agriculture, education, and traffic management are being prepared under the initiative, with ₹14 crore allocated over the first two years, according to the survey.
The document also underlined structured efforts within government to identify potential AI adoption areas. Workshops across departments have mapped 55 use cases, including 15 with high-impact potential across education, health, and road safety.
There are sector-specific pilots too. In agriculture, AI- and drone-based paddy cultivation pilots covering more than 870 acres have reported yield gains of 15–20%, supported by soil analysis, pest monitoring, and precision advisories, the survey noted.
In healthcare, the survey highlighted AI-led tools such as ePathway for cataract detection and COVA for oral disease screening, as well as collaborations to integrate AI into medical equipment for clinical support.
The survey placed these developments within the broader expansion of Tamil Nadu’s services economy and digital infrastructure, noting that technology, talent and data systems are expected to support future adoption of AI-led solutions across sectors.
