Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has acquired two large land parcels in Visakhapatnam and Pune that are expected to house OpenAI’s first data centre facilities in India, according to a report by The Economic Times.

The Andhra Pradesh government has allotted 200 acres to TCS in Anakapalli district near Visakhapatnam, a region that is rapidly emerging as a hub for AI infrastructure. The site is located close to Google’s under-construction 1 GW hyperscale data centre, positioning the area as a key destination for large-scale AI and cloud investments.

Separately, TCS has purchased an 88-acre land parcel in Bopkhel, Pune, from Hemisphere Properties for ₹640.5 crore. The public sector enterprise is responsible for monetising assets formerly owned by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), now Tata Communications.

According to the report, the two sites are expected to support OpenAI’s infrastructure expansion in India as the company scales its computing capacity to serve growing demand for AI services.

The Visakhapatnam site adds to Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to attract hyperscale data centre investments, while the Pune acquisition strengthens TCS’ infrastructure footprint in one of India’s largest technology hubs. The report said both locations are being considered for OpenAI’s first data centre facilities in the country.

The development follows a broader trend of global AI companies expanding data centre capacity in India to meet rising demand for model training and inference workloads.

The country has also been positioning itself as a destination for AI infrastructure through state-backed compute initiatives and growing private sector investments.

The land acquisitions build on the strategic partnership announced by The Tata Group and OpenAI in February. Under the agreement, OpenAI became the first customer of TCS’ HyperVault data centre business, with an initial commitment of 100 MW of AI-ready capacity that could scale to 1 GW over time. The partnership is part of OpenAI’s global Stargate initiative to build AI infrastructure outside the US while supporting data residency, security and low-latency AI services in India.
