UPES Dehradun said it has partnered with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Edu across its campus, aiming to integrate AI into teaching, learning, research, and student services.
The university said all students, faculty, and staff will get access to ChatGPT Edu, OpenAI’s education-focused offering with administrative controls and enterprise security. The deployment is intended to embed AI into academic and institutional workflows.
“We are excited to be one of the pioneering Indian universities to commit to a governed, campus-wide GenAI deployment at this scale—treating AI as core academic and service infrastructure, not a series of experiments,” said Dr Sunil Rai, Vice Chancellor, UPES. “We are purposefully architecting an AI-first university where AI is woven into the very fabric of learning, teaching, research, and student life.”
The university said the rollout will include an AI tutor aligned with course requirements to support understanding of concepts, practice, and multilingual learning.
It will also introduce systems to maintain academic integrity while allowing AI use, as well as a student services module to guide users through policies and escalate issues when needed.
UPES said it will implement a Responsible AI Charter to define acceptable use, privacy, and data handling practices. It also plans to provide students and faculty with access to advanced research models.
“India already has the largest student community on ChatGPT,” said Raghav Gupta, Head of Education, India and Asia-Pacific at OpenAI. “As the depth with which AI tools are used evolves, they will become integrated into everyday learning. This effort by UPES leans into that and will make AI a core part of the academic experience.”
The university said students will receive real-time support, translation, and feedback, and will be trained to apply AI within their disciplines. Faculty are expected to use AI to reduce routine tasks, while researchers may use it to organise information and support analysis.
