Customer service software company Zendesk has announced a definitive agreement to acquire AI startup Forethought, a move aimed at expanding its autonomous AI capabilities and accelerating the development of self-improving AI agents for customer service.
The proposed acquisition will integrate Forethought’s technology into Zendesk’s Resolution Platform, enabling AI agents to automate and manage complex customer service workflows across multiple channels and enterprise systems.
The company said the deal comes as autonomous AI is expected to handle more customer service interactions than human agents in 2026, signalling a structural shift in how customer support operations are managed.
Tom Eggemeier, CEO, Zendesk, said, “The era of simply managing conversations is over. The future of customer experience requires agentic capabilities built for definitive resolution.” He added that forethought’s advanced capabilities perfectly align with the vision and scaling of self-improving AI that learns from every interaction. This proposed acquisition will ensure customers have the absolute best tools to drive measurable growth in the AI era.”
Zendesk’s AI agents already resolve more than 80% of service interactions end-to-end across its customer base, according to the company. Its Resolution Learning Loop system continuously improves performance by analysing customer conversations and automatically updating workflows without manual retraining.
With Forethought’s technology, Zendesk plans to expand these capabilities to develop fully self-learning AI agents that can design and execute multi-step workflows, automate customer support tasks across voice and digital channels, and integrate with enterprise systems even where application programming interfaces (APIs) are unavailable.
“Joining Zendesk is the fastest way to accelerate the resources and global reach. We will bring our technology to many more organisations around the world, move faster on innovation, and continue pushing the boundaries of what AI can do in customer experience,” said Sami Ghoche, Co-Founder and CEO, Forethought.
He noted that their customers, the innovative products and teams they trust today will be strengthened by Zendesk’s scale, platform, and investment.
The enhanced platform will include specialised AI agents tailored for B2B, B2C, and internal enterprise use cases, as well as autonomous workflow execution and expanded voice automation capabilities.
Industry analysts say the acquisition signals growing confidence in agentic AI technologies that can independently execute tasks rather than simply assist human operators.
“Zendesk is making a bold statement that agentic AI will define the next era of customer experience,” said Keith Kirkpatrick, Vice President and Research Director, The Futurum Group.
The transaction is expected to close by the end of March, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.
