In the fiscal year 2022, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur filed a record 107 IPRs. The institute has submitted the most Intellectual Property Rights (107) in its history for the second year in a row. Out of 107, different IPR prospects included 80 patents, 23 design registrations, two copyrights and one trademark application, along with one US patent application.
The patents covered breakthroughs in various fields, from NanoTech to MedTech. It contains many healthcare solutions, like drug delivery systems based on medical plants that are used in conventional medicine to treat injured bones. An improved transgene for ocular gene therapy, disease-modifying medication combinations for osteoarthritis treatment, and an electrochemical system for glucose testing was among the other patents that were filed this year.
The number of IPRs granted during the year increased, according to the Institute. Among the 95 such granted patents, it includes a tactile smartwatch for the visually impaired, water quality monitoring innovations like a dry and compact water purification vessel, and a solar energy-based Root Zone Heating system, etc. It has been working to increase the number of IPR filings while also facilitating more technology transfer transactions and distributed technologies from the institute’s lab to the companies’ production lines.

The Institute has reached a gross total of 917 IPRs over the period of time.
