AIM 100: India's Most Influential People Shaping AI in 2026
Ajay Kumar Sood
Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India

Over the past year, Ajay Kumar Sood has played a central role in shaping India’s national AI governance agenda. He oversaw the release of the government’s techno-legal framework for AI governance, advocating a balanced approach that combines technological safeguards with regulation instead of relying on legislation alone. With him at the helm, the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser has also advanced national discussions around AI readiness, trusted AI, quantum technologies and cybersecurity while supporting initiatives aligned with the IndiaAI Mission.
Sood has consistently argued that India’s AI leadership must rest on innovation, governance and scientific capability in equal measure. Across national and international forums, he has emphasised responsible AI, stronger R&D investment and the need for India to build strategic capabilities in areas such as quantum technologies, advanced computing and secure digital infrastructure. His approach has focused on ensuring that AI serves as an engine for national development while remaining trustworthy and inclusive.
