The University Senate at the University of Kerala approved nine new study departments in a recently held meeting. The new departments were approved to equip the University in tune with the current developments in the science and technology sector.
The University plans to establish new departments such as Communication Science and Electronics, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Data Science, Functional Organic Materials, Oceanography and Blue Economy, Renewable Energy, Integrative Biology, and Atmospheric Science and Design.

Each of the departments will offer both PG and PhD programme options. The Communication Science and Electronics department is meant to promote study and research in signal and image processing, nanotechnology and solar energy materials. Artificial intelligence and robotics will focus on computer vision, machine learning, brain and cognitive science and the design and development of robots.
University Pro-vice chancellor, P.P. Ajayakumar, said that the new departments would check the flow of students for higher education to other states and foreign countries. Besides this, research can be redefined to suit the needs of the community and will enhance research and entrepreneurship in new sectors.
