AWS recently announced the general availability of the Local Zones in Bangkok and Kolkata. The Local Zone will be used to deliver applications that require single-digit millisecond latency or local data processing.

AWS Local Zones are a form of infrastructure deployment that place compute, storage, databases, and other chosen AWS services close to a large population and industrial centres.

This comes after AWS announced at the beginning of the year that it would launch Local Zones in over 30 metro areas across 27 countries outside of the US at the beginning of the year. Along with the newly-announced Local Zones in Kolkata, AWS also has Local Zones in Delhi.

Additionally, a few weeks ago, AWS announced that it has set up a data centre in Hyderabad. Government, education, and non-profit organisations, along with startups and entrepreneurs, will be able to exercise greater choices for using Indian data centres to host apps and provide customer service. Guru Bala, head of solutions architecture at AWS Specialised Services, told AIM, “The project will provide customers with more flexibility and choice, while allowing them to architect their infrastructure for even greater fault tolerance, resiliency, and availability across geographic locations."

Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said recently that India is set to become a global cloud computing and data centre hub. The instalment of Local Zones further positions India strongly in this direction.
