Maharashtra has moved a step closer to securing one of India's largest digital infrastructure investments, with Australian data centre operator AirTrunk receiving a letter of intent (LoI) for land allotment at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre for its proposed data centre project.

The announcement was made by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following a meeting with AirTrunk Founder and CEO Robin Khuda. The proposed project involves an investment of approximately ₹2 lakh crore and is expected to create a data centre ecosystem with a planned capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW).

According to the CM, the project will be developed at the Raigad Pen Growth Centre, also referred to as Orange City, and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Maharashtra's digital infrastructure and data economy.

AirTrunk, one of the world’s largest hyperscale data centre operators, is backed by global investment firm Blackstone. The company has been expanding its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region to support growing demand for cloud computing, AI, and digital services.

The proposed Maharashtra facility is expected to support the increasing need for large-scale computing infrastructure driven by AI workloads, cloud adoption, and data localisation requirements.

The meeting was also attended by Paul Murphy, Australia's Consul-General, highlighting the growing technology and investment partnership between India and Australia.

If implemented as planned, the project would rank among the largest data centre investments announced in India and further strengthen Maharashtra's position as a key destination for digital infrastructure and technology investments.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra is going all in to emerge as the leading destination for data centre investments, with the state government fast-tracking approvals and execution of projects announced during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos.

Speaking last week, Fadnavis said the state is actively working to translate investment commitments into operational infrastructure.
