Amazon Web Services (AWS) has begun expanding its data centre operations in Hyderabad, marking the next phase of its cloud infrastructure investment in India.
The company held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new facility in the AWS (Asia Pacific) Hyderabad Region alongside Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.
The expansion is part of Amazon’s plan to invest more than $21 billion in cloud infrastructure in India between 2026 and 2030, a commitment announced under the company’s broader $48 billion investment across its India businesses.
The investment will increase AWS’ data centre capacity in Hyderabad and Mumbai to support demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The company said customers, including startups, enterprises and government organisations, will gain access to AI chips, cloud services, managed AI offerings and developer tools.
“The foundation stone laying for the Amazon Web Services data centre in Bharat Future City will serve as a stepping stone for a wide range of investments and businesses to come forward and invest in Bharat Future City,” said Telangana Chief Minister Reddy. “We are building a world-class city in Bharat Future City with the best of infrastructure.”
AWS said it had invested more than $1.3 billion in the Hyderabad cloud region by the end of 2025. The new investment will continue to support India's Digital India programme and the IndiaAI Mission.
“Since we launched AWS infrastructure in Hyderabad back in 2022, we have deepened our investment and commitment to build sustainable cloud data centre operations in the State of Telangana to help meet the growing demands of Digital India and the India AI Mission,” said Anurag Khilnani, Director of Data Centre Delivery at AWS.
“The support of the State Government of Telangana has been essential to fast-tracking the build of India’s digital backbone in Hyderabad. We look forward to continuing to invest in the State of Telangana into the local data centre supply chain, local workforce and the local community to serve India's growing digital and AI ambitions,” he added.
Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said the expansion reinforces the state's ambition to become a hub for AI and cloud infrastructure.
“As AI transforms every sector, data centres have become the foundational infrastructure of the digital economy,” he said. “Telangana has created an ecosystem where progressive policies, reliable infrastructure, abundant clean energy, world-class talent and ease of doing business come together to enable global-scale investments.”
Alongside the infrastructure expansion, AWS said it is expanding workforce development efforts through its Amazon Data Centre Skilling Program. The programme has trained 250 students in Hyderabad on data centre operations over four years, with 110 graduates joining AWS' data centre operations team.
The fourth cohort recently graduated 51 students from Vardhaman Engineering College in Shamshabad, Telangana.
AWS also said it has trained more than 10 million people in India in cloud skills since 2017 through programmes including AWS Skill Builder, AWS Educate and AWS re/Start.
