AirTrunk, the Asia Pacific and Middle East’s leading hyperscale data centre platform, has announced the acquisition of Indian data centre developer Lumina CloudInfra.
The deal, backed by long-term capital from private equity giant Blackstone and Canadian pension fund CPPIB, hands AirTrunk immediate access to Lumina’s development pipeline, existing contracts, and operating capabilities across three of India’s tier-1 markets—Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. The transaction unlocks an approximately 600MW portfolio of planned capacity, representing up to $5 billion (~£3.9 billion) of future development potential.
With the acquisition complete, AirTrunk will scale to more than 3GW of operating and planned capacity across 20 campuses spanning six regions, including Australia, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and India.
Robin Khuda, Founder and Chief Executive of AirTrunk, described the deal as a pivotal moment for the company’s regional ambitions. “India is one of the largest and fastest growing markets for hyperscale and AI infrastructure worldwide, and expanding in this market is a significant milestone for AirTrunk's broader APAC strategy,” he said. “By acquiring Lumina CloudInfra, we are uniquely positioned to deliver the scale, speed, and performance our customers need as they expand across the APAC region.”
India’s data centre market is forecast to grow, with national installed capacity expected to rise from roughly 1.5GW in 2025 to around 10GW by 2030, according to Deloitte. The growth is being driven by widespread cloud adoption, 5G expansion, tightening data sovereignty regulations, and the country's position as home to the world’s largest mobile user base. The Indian government has also set its sights on becoming a global artificial intelligence powerhouse through its IndiaAI Mission initiative, further stoking demand for AI-ready infrastructure.
Sujeet Deshpande, Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Lumina CloudInfra, welcomed the tie-up. “Our team is excited to join AirTrunk as we continue building India’s digital infrastructure,” he said. “Lumina enters this next chapter as a scaled operator with strong local capabilities, deep expertise, and a proven delivery track record.”
Deshpande added that the combination of the two businesses would deliver meaningful benefits for staff, customers, and partners. “By bringing our team together with AirTrunk, we combine local strength with global platforms in design, construction, operations, safety, quality, and technology—along with access to AirTrunk’s global customer network and capital strength. Together, our teams will grow, delivering greater consistency, scale and opportunity for our people, customers, and partners.”
Peng Wei Tan, Senior Managing Director for Real Estate at Blackstone, said, “This partnership marks a meaningful expansion of our data centre portfolio and reinforces one of Blackstone's highest conviction themes, digital infrastructure.”
The acquisition positions AirTrunk to capitalise on what analysts describe as unprecedented nationwide demand for hyperscale and AI-ready facilities in India, combining the company’s global supply-chain strength and established relationships with the world’s largest cloud and AI customers with Lumina’s entrenched market presence and local execution capability.
