IT services firm Cognizant has secured a multi-year technology services contract from US health insurer Centene Corp, in a deal valued at more than $500 million and potentially approaching $1 billion, according to a Moneycontrol report citing people familiar with the matter.
The report said the exact value of the engagement could vary depending on its final structure.
As Centene is an existing Cognizant customer, the contract is expected to comprise both renewal of existing work and new business.
According to the report, Cognizant is expected to deploy its TriZetto healthcare software platform alongside its recently launched agentic AI offerings, including Flowsource and Agent Foundry, to support functions such as medical claims processing, billing automation, and customer service operations.
AIM has reached out to Cognizant regarding the development but did not receive a response at the time of publishing.
Cognizant and Centene had entered into a $2.7 billion master services agreement in 2014 through Health Net, but the arrangement was restructured after Centene acquired Health Net in 2016. Centene is a Fortune 500 company that primarily acts as an intermediary for government sponsored health programmes, focusing on uninsured and low-income groups.
The reported deal comes as large IT services providers increasingly pitch AI-led transformation rather than traditional labour-arbitrage outsourcing, with enterprises restructuring long-term contracts into shorter, outcome-based engagements. In the January-March 2026 quarter, Cognizant reported a 21% year-over-year increase in bookings.
Cognizant is scheduled to report its second-quarter results on July 29, 2026. Its shares closed 0.29% lower on Nasdaq on July 20.
