Cognizant to Train 15,000 Forward Deployed Engineers Under Frontier Workforce Model

Cognizant said it will expand its AI-focused workforce by creating 15,000 specialised professionals, essentially forward-deployed engineers, under its newly announced Frontier programme, as IT services companies increasingly shift investments from AI experimentation to large-scale enterprise deployment.

The Nasdaq-listed technology services company said it aims to build a workforce of 5,000 Frontier Certified Engineers and 10,000 Frontier Business Operators, with its first deployment-ready batch expected by the fourth quarter of 2026.

Cognizant also plans to augment its own frontier talent pipeline through annual direct hires of Frontier-native talent from American and global universities.

The initiative comes as global IT services firms race to build AI capabilities amid rising enterprise demand for agentic AI, automation, and industry-specific AI deployments.

Rather than focusing only on AI model implementation, Cognizant said the programme is designed to combine technical expertise with operational and domain knowledge to help clients translate AI investments into measurable business outcomes.

"Closing the AI outcome gap demands talent who not only understand a client's industry deeply but can also reimagine the way work is structured and take end-to-end responsibility for delivering results in collaboration with clients, on any model or cloud the client selects," Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S said in a statement.

The company said its frontier workforce will be model- and cloud-agnostic, allowing teams to work across AI platforms from providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, NVIDAI, Salesforce, and ServiceNow.

It plans to strengthen its AI talent pipeline through expanded training infrastructure, certification programmes, and responsible AI education across its workforce.

The programme will be organised around two roles.

Frontier Certified Engineers are AI specialists who will design, deploy and manage enterprise-grade agentic AI systems, combining deep industry expertise with full-stack AI engineering. They will build the retrieval and context layers that keep AI systems grounded in business-specific knowledge, orchestrate multiple AI agents into production, and remain responsible for monitoring, tuning, and improving these systems after deployment.

Meanwhile, Frontier Business Operators will oversee day-to-day business outcomes in workplaces where human employees and AI agents work together, using their operational expertise to manage AI-driven workflows, handle exceptions, and continuously refine agent performance to improve reliability and align with client requirements.

Many enterprises are now looking at forward-deployed engineering as a new revenue stream as AI cannibalises revenue. Within days of one another, both Amazon Web Services and Microsoft announced major investments in dedicated engineering organisations that will work directly with enterprise customers to deploy AI.
