Google has introduced a dedicated Gemini app for Mac, enabling users to engage with its AI assistant without leaving their current window. The app can be summoned via a keyboard shortcut and features image creation, on-screen analysis and file review. The app, built entirely in Swift, introduces deep system integration, productivity tools, and screen-sharing features.
“Introducing Gemini on Mac. It’s the first time we’re bringing the Gemini app to desktop. The team built this initial release with Antigravity, and it went from an idea to a native Swift app prototype in a few days. More features on the way,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, wrote on X.
Google Vice President Josh Woodward said that the app was developed in under 100 days by a small team. Unlike previous web-based access, the new Gemini app runs natively on macOS, promising faster performance and tighter integration with Apple’s ecosystem. The app requires macOS 15 or a newer update, and is available as a free download.
The Gemini app introduces keyboard shortcuts for instant access: pressing Option + Space opens a mini chat window, while Option + Shift + Space brings up the full interface. These shortcuts can be customised, and the app integrates with macOS features such as the Dock and menu bar.
Users can now generate text, summarise documents, brainstorm ideas and write code, analyse images and share screens for contextual assistance, configure session resets, customise how chats open, and choose different voice options for responses.
Gemini can also help with tasks like drafting reports, verifying facts, building spreadsheets, and even generating images and videos, making it a versatile tool for professionals and creators.
The launch positions Google directly against rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, both of which already offer dedicated Mac apps. Google’s move aims to establish Gemini as a system-level assistant, catching up with competitors who have been quicker to expand into desktop environments, India Today reported.
The rollout comes just weeks before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, where Apple is expected to unveil a revamped Siri powered by custom Gemini AI models. The company said that Gemini could also underpin broader Apple Intelligence features, signalling deeper collaboration between the two tech giants.
For Indian users, especially professionals in sectors like fintech, IT services, and creative industries, the Gemini app offers a streamlined way to integrate AI into daily workflows. The app’s productivity tools and creative features make it particularly relevant for MacBook users in India, who can now access Gemini without switching tabs or relying on Chrome, reports Business Line.
