Apple will manufacture the Mac Mini in the United States for the first time. Production will take place at a new facility in Houston later this year as part of the company’s broader push to expand American manufacturing.
The Houston site will also increase production of advanced AI servers that Apple uses in its data centres across the country.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said in a statement, “The company already began shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule.”
“Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing, and we’re proud to significantly expand our footprint in Houston with the production of Mac mini starting later this year,” Cook added.
The Mac Mini is widely used by students, small businesses, and creative professionals. The new production line will double the size of Apple’s Houston campus and is expected to create thousands of jobs.
Beyond manufacturing, Apple is also investing in workforce development.
Later this year, the company will open a 20,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing centre in Houston. The centre will provide hands-on training in modern manufacturing techniques for students, supplier employees, and small and medium-sized businesses.
The expansion is part of Apple’s previously announced $600 billion commitment to invest in the US economy. The company noted it has already sourced over 20 billion chips from 24 factories across 12 states. It has also supported major semiconductor investments, including facilities operated by partners including TSMC, Broadcom, and Texas Instruments.
In addition, Apple recently opened its Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, which provides training in AI, automation and smart manufacturing to American businesses.
