Meta has entered an agreement with Reliance Industries to lease capacity at a new AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, marking its first such facility in India as the company expands infrastructure to support its AI ambitions.
Under the agreement announced on June 9, Reliance will build a data centre with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW), which Meta will lease with options to scale further.
The facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the costs of the energy and water required to operate the site.
“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data centre in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India's economy,” said Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta.
The investment comes as Meta continues to expand its global infrastructure footprint to support AI technologies and services. The company said India was a key market due to its growing digital economy, large user base, and existing partnership with Reliance.
Meta said the Jamnagar facility will form part of its broader infrastructure strategy in the region alongside network investments, including Project Waterworth, a subsea cable system designed to improve connectivity.
The announcement also extends a relationship between Meta and Reliance that began with Meta’s $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020. The companies have since collaborated on connectivity, commerce, and AI initiatives in India.
“This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India's readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution,” said Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh D Ambani.
Separately, Meta announced agreements for nearly 1 gigawatt of renewable energy capacity in India. The company contracted 837 MW of new solar and wind projects with CleanMax across Rajasthan and Karnataka, bringing its total announced capacity with the provider to more than 900 MW.
It also signed agreements for 88 MW of solar and wind projects with Fourth Partner Energy across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
Meta said the renewable energy agreements, together with Reliance’s plans to support the Jamnagar facility with renewable power, are intended to help meet its goal of matching all operations with 100% clean and renewable energy while reducing value chain emissions in the region.
