Mitsubishi Electric India, a global leader in electrical and electronic equipment has inaugurated a new air conditioner and compressor manufacturing facility in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, with a total investment of approximately ₹2,100 crore.
The facility was virtually inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru M.K. Stalin, through a plaque unveiling, in the presence of the Consul General of Japan, Muneo Takahashi.
Spread across 2,10,000 square metres, the new facility has an annual production capacity of 3,00,000 indoor and outdoor room air conditioners and 6,50,000 compressor units. It is expected to generate more than 2,100 direct and indirect jobs, while significantly strengthening the regional supplier ecosystem through increased localisation, partner capability development, and skill enhancement aligned with global manufacturing standards.
The Chennai plant marks Mitsubishi Electric India’s second manufacturing facility in the country within two years, following the inauguration of its Factory Automation Systems manufacturing plant in Pune in 2023.
The milestone also represents an important chapter in the company’s 15-year journey in India, reinforcing its long-term strategy to deepen localisation, enhance supply chain resilience, and support India’s transition to advanced and sustainable manufacturing.
Aligned with the Indian government’s Make in India initiative, the facility enables higher domestic production of room air conditioners and compressors—components that have traditionally relied on imports.
By manufacturing these products locally, Mitsubishi Electric India aims to reduce import dependence, support the development of a self-reliant HVAC ecosystem and contribute to India’s broader manufacturing ambitions.
“Chennai continues to serve as the manufacturing backbone of Tamil Nadu, anchored by a deep and well-established industrial ecosystem,” CM Stalin said.
The facility also supports India’s environmental and energy efficiency goals. The locally manufactured air conditioners and compressors are designed to comply with India’s evolving energy efficiency standards, contributing to reduced energy consumption and supporting the country’s sustainability and climate objectives amid rising demand for cooling solutions.
“India is witnessing a rapid growth for energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions.
This facility will support this growing demand through local manufacturing, while enabling us to respond faster to customer needs, strengthen quality control, and ensure sustainable operations,” Atsushi Takase, Managing Director, Mitsubishi Electric India said.
Built on Mitsubishi Electric’s global manufacturing principles and advanced Japanese technology, the Chennai facility integrates data-driven and digitally enabled manufacturing processes, enabling real-time monitoring, precision manufacturing, and consistent quality control.
