From cloud storage applications support to data backup, networking to hosting websites, data centres play a pivotal role in running the tech-driven modern world. As per reports, by 2030, data centre revenues will reach $948 billion, up from $466 billion in 2020.  

Here are the 10 largest data centres in the world in 2021.

1|  China Mobile 

Area: 7.7 million sq. ft.

Location: Hong Kong

About: China Mobile International Limited (CMI) data centre is a subsidiary of China Mobile. The data centre is mainly responsible for the operation of China Mobile’s international business. At present, the company has more than 70 terrestrial as well as submarine cable resources worldwide, with a total international transmission bandwidth of over 90T, and a total of 180 POPs.

Area: 10.7 million sq. ft.

Location: Hong Kong

About: China Telecom is one of the largest data centre providers in the world. It offers a complete, end-to-end suite of custom-built IT network solutions from network architectures to managed cloud and data centre services, security, content delivery (CDN), unified communications (UC), mobility solutions and more. At present, China Telecom has more than 280 data centres operating all over the world.

Area: 1.4 million sq.

Location: Western UK

About: CWL1 is one of the largest data centres in Europe that is located near Cardiff in Western UK. The data centre provides Cloud hosting, private Data Halls, or Colocation solutions to enterprise clients. CWL1 offers 270 MW+ of upgradeable power availability, Tier III standards, and is future proof through modular construction mode.

4| DuPont Fabros Technology

Area: 1.6 million sq. ft. 

Location: Virginia, USA

About: Acquired by Digital Realty, DuPont Fabros Technology has several carrier-neutral data centres and provides colocation and peering services. The data centre offers a wide range of cabinet layouts as well as power densities in the 28 computer rooms at the facility. Each room is about 8,500 sq. ft. and provides from 1 megawatt to 2 megawatts of critical power. Also, one room can hold about 380 server cabinets.

Area: 990,000 sq. ft. 

Location: Atlanta, Georgia 

About: QTS: Atlanta Metro is one of the largest data centres in the world. This massive facility features its own on-site Georgia Power substation and direct fiber access to a wide variety of carrier alternatives. The site is currently in the third phase of a multi-year expansion that will more than double its original 200,000 square feet of raised floor space.

About: SuperNAP is developed and operated by Switch, a company based in Las Vegas. The data centre provides colocation, telecommunications, cloud services, and content ecosystems. The SuperNAP data centre is claimed to be the world’s only Tier 5 Platinum hyperscale data centre ecosystems with its prime campuses located in Las Vegas and Tahoe Reno, Nevada; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Atlanta, Georgia.

Area: 7.2 million sq. ft.

Location: Tahoe Reno, Nevada 

About: The Citadel Campus at Tahoe Reno Industrial centre (TRIC) is spread over 1,000 acres and has up to 7.2 million square feet of data centre space. It is also the largest data centre campus in the world. The Citadel Campus will have up to 815 MW of power upon completion, making it the world’s most powerful colocation data centre campus.

About: The Utah Data centre, code-named Bumblehive, is the first Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cyber-security Initiative (IC CNCI) data centre designed to support the Intelligence Community’s efforts to monitor, strengthen and protect the nation. The Utah “massive data repository” is designed to cope with the vast increases in digital data.
