JioStar, the streaming joint venture between Reliance Industries and Disney is planning to expand its use of AI in content creation after the strong performance of its AI-generated series Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh.
According to a Bloomberg report, the company is developing a slate of new shows and films that will be written, animated, voiced and edited entirely using AI. The move is aimed at reducing production costs while meeting growing demand for digital entertainment.
The decision follows the success of Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, a 100-episode AI-generated adaptation of the ancient Indian epic. The series reportedly attracted 6.5 million views on its first day of release in October, more than double the average viewership on JioHotstar.
The company plans to produce more AI-generated content and hire around 80 AI specialists and engineers to support the initiative.
Among the projects currently in development are Makaraj, a new television series, Hanuman, a feature film based on the Ramayana and several short-form micro-dramas.
The company recently appointed veteran American screenwriter and producer Stephan Bugaj to lead its generative AI content strategy. His team is currently recruiting talent to expand the company’s AI-focused entertainment efforts.
JioStar’s push comes at a time when media companies in India and China are increasingly experimenting with AI-generated content to serve audiences that consume large amounts of short-form video on smartphones.
