Google is expanding its artificial intelligence education efforts in India, with plans to roll out its AI Educator Series across Indian schools and higher education institutions. It has also announced a new multi-country partnership with UNICEF to improve learning outcomes for underserved students.
Both initiatives were announced at the Education World Forum 2026 in London.
The Google AI Educator Series (GES), which was originally launched in the United States to provide free Gemini training to K-12 and higher education faculty, will now be extended to Indian educators. The programme offers practical, mobile-first training tailored to the specific needs of teachers and faculty across the country.
Google has confirmed partnerships with the governments of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Assam, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Punjab School Education Board to deliver the initiative. In its first year, the training will be localised into six Indian languages—Assamese, Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi—beginning with select state pilots.
The company said it is actively looking to expand its collaboration to additional states, higher education institutions, and regulatory bodies.
UNICEF Partnership Targets Digital Divide
In a separate but related announcement, Google for Education and Google.org are partnering with UNICEF on a first-of-its-kind initiative to support education innovation in India, Brazil, Pakistan, and Kenya. The three-year programme will focus on improving literacy and numeracy outcomes, training educators, and building more accessible school systems.
The partnership will integrate AI-powered tools including Gemini, NotebookLM, and Google's India-first ReadAlong app, which supports foundational reading fluency through guided practice. Google.org will fund the initiative, and Google will provide technology access, product workshops, and ongoing technical support for UNICEF staff, local governments, and education leaders.
"We will responsibly integrate AI-powered tools to help accelerate progress and reimagine learning, pairing Google's technology with UNICEF's deep expertise in building education systems to ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed," Google said in its announcement.
UNICEF will publish annual impact reports measuring the effectiveness of solutions deployed across each country, with the goal of identifying approaches that are scalable and replicable globally.
The announcements build on Google's existing education commitments in India, which include helping establish India's first AI-enabled state university and integrating Gemini into student learning and test-preparation platforms. Google.org's AI Opportunity Fund has also recently been expanded across the Asia-Pacific region, covering 19 countries and targeting millions of students, teachers, and workers with AI skills training.
