Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has called for a new, user-friendly, and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Government e-Marketplace (GeM) as the platform marks its 10th anniversary. Goyal said the platform would make public procurement more efficient, cost-effective, transparent, and competitive with AI.

"What truly defines GeM is not only the scale we have achieved, but the spirit with which we continue to improve, listening, refining and remaining responsive to the needs of those who use the platform," GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said at the event.

GeM, India's government procurement platform, was launched on August 9, 2016, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The platform now has more than 25 lakh sellers and over 1.37 lakh buyer organisations and has facilitated cumulative procurement of more than ₹20 lakh crore through over 3.78 crore orders, according to the ministry.

Addressing the gathering, Goyal outlined five priorities for GeM's next decade. These included deeper use of AI for price intelligence, price sanity, and marketplace integrity, alongside last-mile access through GeM's Suvidha Kendras, integration of states, public enterprises, panchayats and cooperatives, credit and sustainability initiatives, and university outreach.

Goyal said the new platform would help buyers and sellers make more intelligent use of the procurement process and the latest technologies.

The AI push builds on technology GeM has already deployed. In May 2025, GeM launched GeMAI, which it described as India's first generative-AI-powered chatbot in the public sector. The system supports voice and text interactions in 10 Indian languages and was introduced to improve user support on the procurement platform. It enables users to search, navigate, and complete transactions on GeM.

Earlier this year, GeM collaborated with BHASHINI, an AI-powered language translation and technology platform launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It aims to promote multilingual access, multilingual governance, and multilingual service delivery across GeM's digital platforms, enabling stakeholders to access information and services in their preferred languages.
