Schaeffler India has launched a new computational research infrastructure at the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development in Bengaluru, aimed at strengthening advanced research capabilities in high-performance computing, sustainable mobility, materials engineering, and energy systems.

The initiative, announced recently, is part of Schaeffler India’s broader collaboration with the  Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and is expected to support large-scale simulations, data-intensive modelling, and advanced analytics for research and industry projects.

As part of the project, the facility has been upgraded with dedicated lab space, advanced in-rack cooling systems, power backup infrastructure, and high-performance hybrid computing workstations and clusters designed to improve computational efficiency and accelerate scientific research.

The enhanced infrastructure will support IISc faculty, FSID-incubated startups, external startups, MSMEs, and industry partners engaged in collaborative R&D projects. It is also expected to indirectly benefit PhD scholars, undergraduate and postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and the wider academic ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Schaeffler India has also signed a Master Research Agreement (MRA) with IISc to enable multiple future collaborative research projects.

CEO Harsha Kadam said the initiative reflects the company’s long-term commitment to industry-academia collaboration and research-driven innovation.

“At Schaeffler India, we are committed to building skills and manufacturing excellence rooted in India’s unique strengths, aligned with its needs, and geared towards creating lasting value. Such efforts depend on strong academia-industry collaboration, with institutions like the IISc playing a critical role in equipping researchers with the right tools and expertise,” Kadam said.

He added that the facility, supported under Schaeffler India’s CSR programme HOPE, would enable research across multiple streams while strengthening the pipeline of joint projects between the company and IISc.

Sai Gautam Gopalakrishnan said the initiative would help build a large-scale computational ecosystem with a long-term target of achieving peak computing performance of nearly 32 PFLOPs through a mix of CPUs and GPUs.

“With the long-term aim of creating a computational facility with a peak performance of around 32 PFLOPs, comprising a mixture of CPUs and GPUs, the facility will be highly beneficial for the research groups at IISc, startups incubated at FSID, and industries that collaborate with FSID/IISc,” he said.

B Gurumoorthy, Director of the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development, said the new infrastructure would significantly enhance FSID’s ability to support interdisciplinary research and industry collaboration.

“This collaboration with Schaeffler India marks an important step in enhancing FSID’s capabilities in high-end simulations, data-intensive research, and next-generation technology development. We see this as a strong example of how industry-academia partnerships can accelerate research and innovation with real-world relevance,” he said.

According to the company, the partnership aims to accelerate scientific research outcomes, strengthen workforce capabilities, and support the development of industry-relevant solutions in advanced engineering and mobility technologies.
