GitHub has announced that the company is now making private repositories with unlimited collaborators available to all GitHub accounts. The company has further announced that all of the core GitHub features are now free for everyone.
In a recent blog post, the company stated, “until now, if your organisation wanted to use GitHub for private development, you had to subscribe to one of our paid plans. But every developer on earth should have access to GitHub. Price shouldn’t be a barrier.”
With this initiative, the company is providing free unlimited private repositories for all including the team that use the service for commercial projects as well as up to 2,000 minutes per month of free access to GitHub actions — the automation and CI/CD platform of the company. Teams will also be able to manage their work together in one place: project management, code review, packages and more.
“We want everyone to be able to ship great software on the platform developers love,” the blog stated.
This initiative by the company has taken a freemium approach, where GitHub has cut its subscription prices by more than half. The teams that want more advanced features on GitHub, like code owners, enterprise features like SAML or personalised support, will still have to upgrade to a paid plan. Otherwise, teams can start their subscription at $4 per month, instead of the previous $9, with the Enterprise plan starting at $21 per month.
