Justin Timberlake’s “Filthy” Stirs Up A Debate In The AI Community

Share

Justin Timberlake’s new sci-fi dance video is a tribute to artificial intelligence and robotics and has an interesting take on the most debated technology of all times—artificial intelligence. The video has already divided the Twitterati with reactions from AI scientists pouring in on Timberlake’s commentary on AI and how it has been mainstreamed in popular culture. Borrowing Steve Job’s sartorial style, Timberlake seems to address a futuristic conference with some advanced robot moves.

Set at a fictional conference called the Pan Asian Deep Learning conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in the year 2028 with a cosplay of Steve Jobs, Timberlake introduces a robot to the “deep learning” professionals, that takes center stage with Timberlake controlling it with his move backstage. The robot can be seen acting as if real, pouring a glass of water, stacking the block and kicking a soccer ball to the crowd. This rather benevolent AI, towards the end of the video is set free of the puppet strings and gets major cheering from the crowd. Meanwhile, Timberlake is shown to be disappearing, may be suggesting that he wasn’t the real puppeteer either.

The video leaves us with an important question about what’s real and what’s not, just the way artificial intelligence has managed to stir human existence.

While many have welcomed the concept shown in the video by Timberlake, others have shown flake to the video that has shades of Ex Machina’s cyborg dance scene. The robot points towards the future of AI, whether good or bad, remains a question! It definitely shows that we are shifting towards artificial intelligence, and robots may be more common in the future than we think.

Just the way at the end of the video, Timberlake is shown to be completely disappeared, allowing the robot to take all the credits for the achievements it had marked, there are many who believe that “Filthy” is the futuristic vision of tech and AI, where creation overtakes the creator. Does the video hint towards creating a persona that becomes more powerful than its maker, confessing the vulnerability of the creator? The experts continue to debate while Timberlake continues to sing, “If you know what’s good.”
