Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced plans to launch NFTs on Instagram at a session at South By Southwest. “We are working on bringing NFTs to Instagram in the near term, I’m not ready to announce exactly what that’s going to be today, but, over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, and hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment,” he said.
Earlier, Instagram’s top executive Adam Mosseri said the company was “actively exploring” the technology. Zuckerberg said NFTs could one day play a role in the company’s metaverse. “I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT and you can take it between your different places,” he said, “There’s like a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”
Zuckerberg, who famously used to wear the same grey t-shirt every day, also said he does most of his shopping on Instagram and Facebook. “Probably most of the stuff that I wear, I probably bought through an Instagram, or Facebook Shops or ads,” he said.
