American cloud platform Vercel and the creators of Next.js have released Next.js 13 at Next.js Conference, held on Tuesday. The launch brings the latest innovations in cloud infrastructure and JavaScript tooling to the mainstream for developers to create and execute new ideas.
The Next.js conference was hosted by Vercel, with over 100,000 registrants. Vercel CEO and founder Guillermo Rauch said, “Six years ago, we open-sourced Next.js with the goal of creating a zero-configuration React framework that simplified the developer experience. With over 2,400 contributors, over 200 million downloads, and a global community of developers, it’s incredible to see what we’ve been able to accomplish together.
The founder adds that the company’s goal is to make the web faster by providing developers the tools required to build experiences users love. “We’re taking the lessons from the giants and making them available to anyone building on the Web,” says Rauch.
Meanwhile, Vercel has introduced Turbopack, the successor to Webpack. It is a brand-new bundler for TypeScript and JavaScript codebases written in Rust. Turbopack is the first and only build system for the codebases designed for incremental builds for both development and production.
Next.js 13 includes updates to modules within the Next.js toolkit that make some commonly used parts of websites faster and more reliable for developers, including images, font, scripts, and social cards. The toolkit mainly includes enhanced font support and functionality, enhancements in image optimization, and Instant Open Graph (OG) Image Generation.
