PyCharm 2022.1: What’s new about it?

PyCharm has reworked Docker’s UI to make it less messier than before.

Developed by JetBrains and released initially in 2020, PyCharm is the most popular Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Python. The cross-platform IDE is available on Windows, macOS and Linux operating systems. It offers services like code completion and inspection, advanced debugging, and supports web programming and frameworks like Django and Flask that help secure and maintain websites.

JetBrains has released a new version called PyCharm 2022.1, which has improved features of its previous version, PyCharm 2021.2, which was released last year, to make the workflow easier and more straightforward for users. Several of the features that had been previously implemented were simply polished to help users become more productive.

New features in Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

  1. Authentication support for custom package repositories

The new version of PyCharm can configure basic HTTP authentication so that users can access custom package repositories and manage dependencies with ease. The user is not required to switch to the terminal for manual installation. They can go to the Python Packages tool window, click on the gear window and then click on the plus sign in the dialogue window to add the repository URL and click on the Basic HTTP option to enter the necessary credentials.

2. Support for custom rendering

PyCharm 2022.1 makes debugging sessions easier and faster for users. When users are working with objects that have a large number of attributes, they will be able to customise the display format according to their requirements using renderers. Renderers are mainly useful when the contents of a custom collection aren’t necessarily easily readable and need to be arranged in a manner so that they are identifiable at a glance.

3. New notification tool window

The older Event Log tool window has been replaced with a new notification tool window. This organises new notifications that are relevant and helpful suggestions in a way that is simple and hard for the user to miss.

  • Users can also reformat their code even in LightEdit mode. The user needs to go to Code and then Reformat Code in the main menu or click on ⌥⌘L.
  • Even though Python 3 executable isn’t found, PyCharm 2022.1 can now install it on macOS.

Additions to Editing

  1. Improved code completion for TypedDict

PyCharm has made it easy to use TypedDict literals as arguments for functions or to be represented by objects from classes where TypeDict is expected by offering code completion for the available keys.

2. Run commands from Markdown files

When the user is working with Markdown files which contain instructions with commands to execute like README files, they can run these commands directly from the files by clicking on the run icons in the gutter.

3. New copy code snippet feature for Markdown

The new copy code snippet in Markdown blocks allows users to copy contents to the clipboard easily, just with a single click.

4. Better TypedDict per-key warnings

PyCharm displays per-key error messages pointing towards individual values that may be incorrect, missing or look strange when a dictionary is created as a literal or by using the dict constructor where TypedDict is expected.

  • The new floating Markdown toolbar helps users select headers and create lists.
  • The user can also use the ‘Join Lines’ action even when it comes to ‘if’ statements.

Features for Remote Support

  1. New UI for Docker

PyCharm has reworked Docker’s UI to make it less messy than before. The new Docker under the Services tool window gives the user much easier control of your images, networks, volumes and containers.

2. Docker Registry V2 support

PyCharm has also added support for Docker Registry HTTP API V2 to use with Docker 1.6+. Users can create Docker V2 registries that are simple and password-protected while performing the usual actions of viewing, pushing and pulling images.

3. Custom path to kubectl

Users can manually configure the path to kubectl even if it is not available in the standard location. Users can set up a custom path by going to Settings or Preferences and then Build, Execution, Deployment, then click on Kubernetes and then Path to Kubectl executable.

  • Kubernetes now also provides post forwarding functionality for pods.
  • Under the Services tool, there is a new Describe Resource action.
  • Users can make modifications to the resources from the user tab itself.

Support for Jupyter Notebook

  1. Code cells stay in Edit mode after execution

After the user clicks on ‘Run Cell’ and ‘Insert Below,’ the newly added cell defaults to Edit mode so that the user can begin writing code straight away. Similarly, once you edit and run the current cell, it stays in edit mode after being executed.

2. Optimal cell copy-pasting

When a cell was copied and pasted in Command mode previously to reorganise your notebook, among other reasons, it was only the cell that was pasted to the new position and not its output. This has been updated in PyCharm 2022.1.

Besides, there is also support available for Jupyter’s runtime code completion.
