In this endeavour, Bengaluru is helping these tech giants by being one of the biggest sources of talent in this field. In this article, we are listing down the top ten AI research centres set up by enterprises in Bengaluru. This list does not include government ventures. 

1| Google AI Research 

Recently, at the fifth edition of its annual Google for India event, the tech giant announced that it is setting up a research lab mainly focused on AI and its applications. According to reports, the lab will focus on the advancement of Computer Science research such as Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Speech, Natural Languages, etc. in India and it will also focus on creating applications and other services for the benefits of the billions of people. 

2| Bosch Centre for Artificial Intelligence

Bosch Centre for Artificial Intelligence (BCAI) was founded in 2017 in order to deploy AI technologies across Bosch products and services. The research centre focus on building the technology foundation to generate real-world impact through emerging technologies. The areas that are focussed are AI-based dynamic modelling, rich and explainable deep learning, large-scale AI, environment understanding and decision making, control optimisation through Reinforcement Learning along with dynamic multi-agent planning.

3| Samsung R&D

Last year, Samsung India announced that the electronics giant would hire around 1000 engineers from top institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs in order to work specifically in the research and development of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, signal processing, computer vision and other such. The company further plans to hire more than 2,500 engineers for research and development (R&D) roles over the period of the next three years.

4| Societal impact through Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) By Microsoft

Last month, Microsoft Research India announced the launch of a centre for Societal impact through Cloud and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI). The centre is a part of the Microsoft Research (MSR) Lab in Bengaluru which will mainly focus on creating and nurturing projects that can have real-world and large-scale societal impact. The core research themes at Samsung Research include artificial intelligence (AI), data intelligence, robot, next-generation communications & visual technology, Tizen, and security.

5| Technology Innovation Labs By PayPal

In 2017, the global leader in offering digital payment platforms, PayPal launched two technology innovation labs in India.  It aims to work on the internet-of-things, penetration testing, software-defined radios, and wireless communication, virtual and augmented reality, computer vision, and basic robotics. Besides this, the main purpose of the labs is to support the research on machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.

6| Accenture Innovation Hub 

The Accenture Innovation Hub in Bengaluru focuses on digital and cloud to security and artificial intelligence. The Advanced Technology Centres in this hub deliver innovation at scale, using the power of cloud, digital, security and other IT automation, AI, blockchain and more. 

7| Global Research Facility By Ericsson

Last year, Ericsson opened a global Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerator for research and development in Artificial Intelligence and automation in Bengaluru. According to sources, the facility will create 150 jobs for data scientists, engineers, Machine Learning (ML) and AI architects and software developers in 2019.

8| AI Horizons Network By IBM

In Nov 2018, IBM Research India joined hands with IIT Delhi to focus on research collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to discover novel AI techniques which can help organisations make informed decisions by being able to logically reason with their AI systems.  IBM researchers partnered with students and professors from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi to address the issue of untrained AI systems and conduct joint research to inculcate in AI systems some key traits like reasoning, comprehension, and inferencing. 

9| Philips Innovation Campus

Philips Innovation Campus was established in 1996 in Bengaluru with a vision of software research and development across the healthcare sector. Current, the centre is focused on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, smartphone, and tablet enabled Data Analytics, adaptive intelligence-based Radiology Solutions, remote management of ICUs and cloud-based solutions for longitudinal patient data management.

10| Mercedes-Benz R&D India (MBRDI)

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Mercedes-Benz R&D India (MBRDI) was founded in 1996. The focus of this centre is mainly on topics ranging from CAD, CAE and IT programming for all Daimler business units. According to sources, currently, MBRDI is investing a lot in cutting-edge technologies like deep learning and artificial intelligence.
