Last month, Intel®, in collaboration with Analytics India Magazine, successfully concluded Intel-Masterclass on AI innovation with oneAPI on April 13, 2022. The workshop witnessed close to 200+ participants.

Curated by oneAPI certified instructor Shriram Vasudevan, the masterclass was focused on helping developers with basic knowledge of C and C++ and GPU programming explore the endless possibilities with oneAPI for application development and more. The session not only touched upon various use cases on oneAPI but also touched upon oneAPI toolkits and libraries.

Vasudevan started the masterclass by addressing some of the challenges developers face. This includes growth in specialised workloads; the variety of data-centric hardware required; separate programming models and toolchains for each architecture are required today; software development complexity limits; freedom of architectural choice, etc. “oneAPI is most certainly one platform where you can innovate endlessly,” he added.

He said that it starts from the simple applications, where you can attract dimensions of the product and then it can go on till ADAS and DMS systems. “We have tried out, and we have been successful with oneAPI,” said Vasudevan.

Before delving into some of the use cases and applications of oneAPI, he touched upon the oneAPI industry initiative and various oneAPI tools and libraries, like deep neural network library, video processing library, data analytics library, etc. Also, he spoke about oneAPI based toolkit for building applications and more. “All these makes it very easy for anybody to go ahead and start developing apps easily with oneAPI,” added Vasudevan, pointing at multiple repositories, resources and training guide to learn the oneAPI toolkit.

Applications of oneAPI

One of the main highlights of the oneAPI masterclass was the examples and use cases Vasudevan shared with the audience, where he touched upon various applications that use oneAPI across industries, including manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, retail and more.

Vasudevan showed oneAPI innovations, starting with simple applications like measuring the length of a car key and TV remote, and showed us the accuracy and confidence levels compared to manually measuring the hardware devices, and later did for a football field.

He further touched upon automobile applications, where the system was developed through oneAPI and gave instances using US and Indian datasets, respectively, trained in real-time. When tested in a real scenario, the accuracy and confidence level, particularly in identifying objects, was surreal — as shown in the video presentation.

Citing forest animals, Vasudevan said that this could be used to save the lives of animals, particularly those that are crossing railway tracks and highways. Here, CCTV cameras, deep learning, and sensors powered by oneAPI can be used to alert the officials beforehand.

Next, he gave an example of a supermarket, where computer vision and oneAPI were used to identify misplaced items. After that, he showcased one of his friends’ projects, where he used oneAPI to build a face recognition system for security purposes. “This can also be used to read people’s emotions, like happy or sad or neutral,” he added.

Lastly, Vasudevan touched on the Intel® oneAPI blogathon and urged people to participate. This two-month-long blogathon, which started on March 16, will end on June 15, 2022.
