The birth of OpenAI’s conversational chatbot has taken the world by storm with more than 672 million visits and ChatGPT controlling over 92% of the total website traffic. 

Since ChatGPT can write codes and legal essays with equal ease, it has posed a serious threat to many jobs, including those of writers and legal practitioners. 

ChatGPT-like models can improve productivity by assisting with tasks and automating certain processes such as helping with language translation, generating text summary, and responding to queries, data entry, among others. However, it can not yet touch jobs that need physical dexterity or any specialised skills that ChatGPT is not yet knowledgeable enough to handle.

Jobs that ChatGPT is Yet to Replace

Emergency Responders: While AI systems can help in making it easy to generate emergency queries, predict natural disasters and so on, firefighters, police officers and other first responders need to make quick decisions in critical situations and need to be physically present for instant response. 

Reporters: On-ground reporters bring live updates of breaking news which ChatGPT can’t compete with, although it can simplify different writing tasks such as text summarisation, paraphrasing, among others. ChatGPT is a great tool for content creation as well as other media roles such as campaign planning and copywriting. 

Politicians and Diplomats: Without human judgement, negotiation prowess, and critical thinking, one can not mitigate the complicacies of international relations, policy formulation, and diplomacy. 

Medical Professionals: Although ChatGPT has successfully cleared all three parts of the United States Medical Licensing Examination in a single attempt, as per the results of a new experiment, it is yet to disrupt the jobs of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners as they come with a specialised skill sets and provide expert care to the patient.  

Salespersons: Strong interpersonal interactions, persuasion, and communication abilities are essential for everything related to sales. While AI can assist with data analytics and consumer insights, we will still need human assistance to deliver customised services and foster client trust.

Transportation Staff: With the emergence of self-driving vehicles, there has been a shift in jobs. But it also comes with its fair share of consequences. According to US safety regulators, automakers recorded over 400 crashes involving vehicles with partially automated driver-assist equipment, including 273 involving Teslas alone. However, in order to operate heavy machinery, occupations in the transportation industry such as pilots, train operators and truck drivers would require special training. While some aspects of the transportation can be automated, such as using autonomous cars for deliveries, humans will still be required to make important decisions and deal with unforeseen circumstances.

HumanGPT

AI can’t replicate human interactions which are unique to the person. The empathy and emotional intelligence often displayed in human dialogue are yet to be replicated by ChatGPT. A chatbot, for instance, can automate customer service queries and may be able to answer basic customer service questions but it may not be able to offer the same level of assistance and assurance as a human executive.

Echoing similar thoughts, senior AI Researcher Vivek Natarajan of Google told AIM that AI systems like ChatGPT will not replace jobs, rather they will improve productivity and augment workers. He added that the quality will also increase as AI will enable more creative exploration and, in the long term, there may be disruption and some classes of jobs that may be eliminated. This is partly in line with how every technological revolution has only created more jobs and the AI revolution is likely to be no different.

“We are still far away from having robotics work. The real world is insanely challenging and complex and it will be a long time before we can get robots to master skills like carpentry or plumbing and so on,” said Natarajan. 

Instead of taking over manual jobs, AI tech like ChatGPT is set to work alongside humans to automate certain aspects, enhance their abilities and offer additional support. In fact, ChatGPT has also unleashed a host of career opportunities that you could never imagine.
